Mbarara is located in Ankole sub region in western Uganda and known as the ‘land of milk and honey’. It covers a total area of being among the largest districts in Uganda with 16 sub counties. It is bordered by Ibanda to the north, Kiruhura district to the east, Isingiro to the southeast, Ntungamo to the southwest, Sheema district to the west and Buhwenju to the northwest. Mbarara is known as the best place to stay, eat and explore some of the incredible attractions like the Nkokonjeru tombs that contain the tombs of the last 2 kings of Ankole, enjoy game drives, horse riding, quad biking and a boat trip in Lake Mburo national park, visit the cow statue as you reach in the town, and also the Igongo Cultural Centre and discover the rich cultural heritage of Mbarara and the surrounding areas. Mbarara is approximately 290km by road, southwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city which will take about 3-4 hours using the Masaka - Mbarara road.
