SSESE ISLANDS

Ssese islands lie in the northwestern corner of Lake Victoria; the second largest fresh water lake in the world found in Kalangala district with a total number of 84 islands. The islands vary in size with Bugala Island being the largest island and Kalangala is the largest town which serves as the headquarters of the district. The island is divided into 2 main groups the southwest known as Bugala group after Bugala Island and the northwestern group known as the Koome group, after Koome Island and these 2 groups are separated by Koome channel. Before the arrival of Europeans, the island was among the most important spiritual centers of the region. Ssese Island can be accessed using the Kampala – Entebbe highway which may take close to 1 hour due to the hectic jam on the road.
