Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Regions For Gorilla Safari In Uganda

Bwindi impenetrable forest is among Africa’s most ancient rain forests ,home of the infamous endangered mountain gorillas that can only be found in Uganda, Rwanda & DR Congo make it a priceless wildlife tour any adventure seeker and primate enthusiast will quickly fall in love with. However due to the forest’s large size measuring up 340 km2, it has been divide into tracking regions each containing up to 2 gorilla families that have been habituated and used to being around people. A maximum of 8 people are allowed to track the gorillas per region per day and that’s why you have to book a gorilla permit a few months in advance if you stand any chance of doing your gorilla safari in Uganda on a desired date , otherwise you might have to settle for the available permits on another day which normally leads to change of plans like accommodation and routing which isn’t good for budget plan.
Bwindi forest is home to 11 gorilla families residing in 4 tracking regions namely Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Ruhija with each offering various accommodation facilities and routes to different parks say Queen Elizabeth park which is the closest park to Bwindi forest.
Buhoma region¬† which is home to 3 gorilla families ( Habinyanja, Mubare, Rushegura) is the most popularly used region for Uganda gorilla safaris mainly because of it’s proximity to Queen Elizabeth park and wide range of cheap accomodation around. Ruhija region on the other hand is situated in the eastern part of the park home to two gorilla families namely Bitukuar & Oruzugo.
Rushaga region situated in the southern part of Bwindi is the best tracking region home to 5 gorilla families hencve the chances of encountering gorillas in a short time are very high. Nkuringo region only has one gorilla family and that’s why it offers the most strenuous gorilla trekking experience in Uganda though some tourists love the thrill all the more.
