Volcano National Park

Also known as Parc Nationale Des Volcan, The Volcanoes park was established as early as 1925 making it the first national park to be created in Africa. It was first gazetted to protect the dying population of mountain gorillas from the elusive poachers who were hunting them for meat and its expensive hide. Of the 8 Virunga range, 5 of them are situated in Volcanoes park namely Karisimbi, Gahinga, Muhabura, Sabyinyo & Bisoke.
The park is popularly known as home of the mountain gorillas with up to 300 recorded in 10 habituated gorilla families/ groups, other wildlife that roam the park include the beautiful golden monkeys, bush bucks, buffalo, duikers and a few elephants plus up to 178 bird species to mention but a few.


Top tourist activities carried out in the park include gorilla trekking , golden money treks, mountain hiking at Karisimbi & Bisoke volcanos , visits to Dian Fossey tombs & Karisoke Research Center, lake tours and the Iby’Iwachu cultural village tour where you will get chance to see the impressive Ntore dancers do their thing.
