Built across 7 hills, Kampala city is the largest and most urbanized place in Uganda home to lots of commercial centers but that’s not all, it’s also a popular cultural tourist destination where you can get chance to learn about the rich history of Buganda Kingdom; Uganda’s largest and most dominant Bantu kingdom.
A guided city tour around Kampala takes you around popular Buganda cultural sites, ancient religious sites, art & craft shops among others. Below is a brief itinerary of the city tour.
Start off the tour with a trip to Mengo where you will visit Kabaka’s palace (home of Buganda’s king), you will also check out the man-made Kabaka’s lake, Idi Amin’s torture chambers, Buganda parliament aka Bulange. Proceed to Kikaaya hill where Bahai Temple is located, it’s the only place of worship for Bahai faith believers.
You will then proceed to Gaddafi Mosque situated at the old Kampala hill; a popular mosque commissioned by the Late Muammar Gaddafi. It has rich Moroccan architecture and is by far the largest and coolest mosque in Kampala city. Have lunch and then proceed to Owino market, Uganda’s largest market though slowly decreasing in size due to land issues, check out the local cuisine and buy some cheap attire during the walk.
End the city tour with a visit to the local art & craft shops for some souvenirs, buy an original handmade molding, painting, t-shirt, bungle, necklace or tribal attire among others. These funds help contribute to the disabled and those living with HIV/AIDS.
